Last month, Uncle Sam maxed out his credit line.

The US Government hit the debt ceiling ... the current $14.3 trillion statutory borrowing limit.1

Just one month before, Standard & Poor’s downgraded America’s credit rating outlook.2

If Uncle Sam were a typical consumer, he would have been labeled a credit risk ... slapped with sinking credit scores ... and forget about those credit card offers in the mailbox. Just like any other borrower that fits this profile, to find a willing lender now, America may be forced to pay much higher interest rates.

In this scenario, every fixed income investment
in your portfolio could be at risk!

At Banyan Partners, we’ve been preparing for a fundamental shift in the interest rate climate — and for the impact this could have on bond markets and your investment portfolio!

We see two key threats looming that could trigger intense volatility in bond markets in the weeks ahead.

First, in Washington, politicians are now engaged in a debt ceiling debate. The likely outcome: More of the same free-spending ways. After all, Congress has voted to raise the US debt limit 78 times since 1940 ... piling up $10 trillion in new debt just since 1990.3

Second, the Federal Reserve has been busy this year buying $600 billion worth of US Treasury bonds ... on credit ... as part of QE2.

This is on top of the nearly $2 trillion in Fed money printing that took place during the first round of quantitative easing in 2009.4

Over the last nine months alone, the US Federal Reserve has been buying nearly three-quarters of all newly issued US Treasury debt. The Fed is the buyer of last resort, and of course, US taxpayers are on the hook. But the Fed’s bond buying binge comes to an end on June 30th ... just a couple of weeks away!

What happens to bond prices when the Fed stops buying? What impact will the imminent end of quantitative easing have on interest rates and inflation expectations?

The answers to these questions will be crucial to fixed income investors’ portfolios in the weeks and months to come.

Our investment team at Banyan Partners anticipates a fundamental shift in interest rates as inflation starts to rise. In fact, it may already be underway. Inflation is always a threat because it erodes your purchasing power and has a tendency to change unexpectedly.

So, don’t fail to prepare and be caught off-guard when interest rates and inflation are already soaring! NOW is the time to re-evaluate your bond holdings and consider new strategies to help protect your fixed income investments.

We can show you how we are doing it for our clients ... get your FREE Rising Interest Rate Tool Kit Now to learn more about what we expect ahead and what steps you can consider for your portfolio.
